The History of Ruth the moabite

The fields surrounding the town of Bethlehem lie forsaken. No one is working in the fields, even though it is the time of harvest. Why are the men not working? Why are they not harvesting the wheat? Why are the women and children not in the fields to bind the ears into sheaves, or to gather the fallen ears? It is because there is no wheat this year; nothing has grown on the fields, which otherwise were so fertile. The land has been plowed and was sown, but no rain has fallen and therefore hardly anything has grown. The men of Bethlehem don’t need to harvest and the women don’t need to bind sheaves and stack them against each other.
However, the worst thing is that there isn’t anything to eat. For if there is no wheat, then there will be no flour, and if there is no flour, then no bread can be baked either. This is not just the case in Bethlehem, but also in other places. The men, women, and also the children have hardly anything to eat. There is a famine in the land…
